Household Hazardous-Waste Collection Day
As with the previous two Collection Days, paint was the most prolific item turned in. Cans and drums; Drums and cans!

Another blockbuster!

After two hugely successful Household Hazardous-Waste Collection Days in 2006 and 2007 (see here and here for more), we jointly sponsored our third with the St. Tammany Department of Environmental Services on Saturday, March 15th, 2008.

In some ways, this was the best yet. Keep Slidell Beautiful really stepped up with volunteers and especially helped with all the planning that's necessary for this to work.

Also contributing were the City of Slidell and Slidell Lion's Club, St. Tammany Parish Public Works, St. Luke's Men's Club, Pic Recycle, Alpha Phi Alpha, Keep Covington Beautiful, the Slidell City Council, Northshore High, Madisonville Jr. High, LDEQ, and DOW Chemical.

Scott Dye, Director of the Sierra Club's Water Sentinals, supplied the great t-shirts and some other supplies. (He found us via a Google News alert!) Thanks, Scott!
The prizes to the volunteers who came the farthest go to seven from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio (they heard about us through The Green Project) and two from the YMCA in Columbus, Ohio! Thanks guys!!

Community support is building!

This third Collection Day went even smoother than the last. One major reason was the growing number of organizations contributing to planning and the increase in volunteers.

Computers...

...and tires...
...and pie! Oh, my!!

Our three ring leaders -- Diane Casteel and Therese Kwiecien of the Honey Island Group, and Brett Henry, Environmental Specialist with the Parish Department of Environmental Services -- a little windblown and more than a little glad it's over!
