JOIN US FOR HIKING & CAMPING AT TUNICA HILLS, APRIL 19-20
Ranging from St. Francisville, Louisiana, northwest into neighboring
Mississippi along the Mississippi River, the Tunica Hills provide some
of the most scenic and rugged hiking available in the Gulf south. The
Tunica Hills are loessial ridges created tens of thousands of years
ago by dust storms of the Glacier period which swept in from the western
plains carrying powdery soil to form vertical cliffs up to 90 feet high
resting on the bottom of an ancient sea bed.
We will meet up in St. Francisville, LA at 10am and head to the Clark
Creek Natural Area just across the Louisiana line near Pond, Mississippi.
Geologist, Barry Kohl will interpret the unusual geological formations
that can be seen during the hike. There are six waterfalls to see, as
well as many plants that are rare to Louisiana. Because of the cool,
deep ravines, flora such as wild ginseng, trilliums, jack-in-the-pulpit,
violets, ferns, mosses can all be seen.
After hiking, we will find dinner at a local restaurant in St. Francisville,
LA. Those that wish to stay the night can either stay at a B&B,
motel, or join us for camping with some local friends of the New Orleans
Sierra Club group.
On Sunday, we will embark on another short hike or explore the historic,
quaint town of St. Francisville before returning to New Orleans. The
cost of this trip is $15, and does not include meals. We will car pool
from New Orleans Saturday morning, leaving at 7:30am, or you can choose
to head up to St. Francisville on Friday.
This trip is limited to 15 people, so sign up early.
